Without a doubt, the capabilities of the human and its body are simply astounding. Its adaptive power is so great, that it allows the body to submit to astonishing physical demands.
Running is one of the physical demands that can drive a human being to its limit, but if you have any doubts about this, you can’t miss this small 10-minute documentary video, where members of the Kalahari tribe in the South of Africa are seen during a typical hunting day for their people.
The hunting method is known as persistence hunting and is carried out during the peak of heat of the day, when temperatures in Kalahari reach the 102/107º F, running for 2 to 4 hours for distances up to 22 miles.
Before starting, the hunters drink the highest amount of water possible and after picking out their prey they start running it down.
Because the speed of the animal is much greater than that of the hunters, they are forced to track their prey. The challenge is finding it before it gets enough rest and running it down again.
This way they achieve their purpose of exhausting the animal and preventing it from achieving long breaks where it can recover its energy.
Some conclusions that can be drawn from the documentary:
-The human being is usually slower than four-legged animals.
-The human being has high endurance in comparison to other animals.
-The human being’s sweat allows the decrease of body temperature and enables the human being to sustain physical demand for a greater length of time.
-Persistence hunting is based on this, on seeing who collapses first: the animal or the human being. Luckily for the tribe members, the winner is usually the runner, that after selecting its prey begins running it down for hours until it exhausts it.
-Once the prey is exhausted, its at the mercy of the hunter.
